What happened to the Crystal Bar

The SKE Crystal Bar was, for a period, one of the most recognisable disposables in the country. It sold on a clean flavour profile and a distinctive translucent body that made it stand out on a shelf.

Prefilled pods are sealed and are not designed to be refilled. People do attempt it, and the result is almost always a leaking pod and ruined flavour, because the seal and the wick were never built for a second fill.

Nicotine strength

Getting the most from a pod

Let a newly fitted pod sit in the device for two or three minutes before the first draw so the wick saturates fully. This is the single most useful habit with any prefilled system.

Take slow, long draws rather than short sharp ones. These are mouth to lung devices and a hurried pull drags air past cotton that has not caught up, which is what produces that harsh first puff.

Keep pods upright and out of direct sunlight. Heat thins the liquid and pushes it past the seals, which causes the leaking that then gets blamed on the pod.

Troubleshooting

Burnt taste. The pod is finished, or it was drawn on before the wick saturated. Neither is recoverable.

No vapour. Charge it first. Then wipe the contacts on both pod and device with dry kitchen roll, because creeping e liquid on the contacts is the usual cause.

Gurgling. Liquid pooled in the airway, common after the device has been carried warm. Remove the pod and tap it gently mouthpiece down onto kitchen roll.

Flavour fading after a few days. Usually vapers tongue rather than a fault. Rotate to a different flavour family for a day and it resets.

Every prefilled pod sold legally in the UK is capped at 2ml and 20mg nicotine per ml. If this is your first vape

A prefilled pod system is the right starting point for most people leaving cigarettes. There is nothing to learn, nothing to fill and no wattage to set, so the only decision you make is flavour.

Buy the device with at least two flavours. Palates fatigue quickly on a single flavour, and having a second pod to rotate into is what keeps the habit going through the first fortnight.

Expect two or three days of adjustment. The hand to mouth routine transfers straight away, but the throat sensation takes longer to feel normal. Check your destination before flying. Several countries restrict or ban nicotine vaping products outright, including some where cigarettes remain freely available, and penalties in a few of them are severe.

Storage

Keep sealed pods somewhere cool and dark. Nicotine oxidises slowly when exposed to light and heat, which darkens the liquid and dulls the flavour well before the pod is used.

Avoid leaving a device on a car dashboard or a sunny windowsill. Heat is the main cause of leaking in prefilled systems, and it is entirely avoidable.
