Why the Caliburn mattered

Before the Caliburn, small pod devices were mostly bad. They leaked, they wicked poorly and the flavour was thin. Uwell got the wicking right, and the result was a device the size of a lighter that gave a satisfying, tight, cigarette like draw without drama.

It sold in enormous numbers and it is still one of the most owned devices in the country, which is why keeping the full pod range in stock matters more here than for most brands. A great many people are running Caliburns bought years ago.

Uwell also did something unusual and kept the format broadly sensible across generations, though not identical, which is the subject of the next few sections.

Caliburn G3 replacement pods

The G3 is the current flagship of the G line. The pods are refillable with a replaceable coil, adjustable airflow is built into the pod itself, and the wicking is the best Uwell has produced.

If you own a G3, these are the pods you need. They do not fit earlier G devices.

Caliburn G and G2 pods and coils

The distinction matters. On the G line the coil is a separate part that drops into a pod you keep and reuse, so you replace the cheap coil regularly and the pod only occasionally. That is what makes the G line cheaper to run than most pod systems.

Caliburn A2 and A2S refillable pods

The A line is the simpler, cheaper branch. A2 and A2S pods have the coil built in permanently, so when it tires you replace the whole pod. Fewer parts, less to think about, slightly higher running cost.

Caliburn A3S refillable pods

The A3S is the current model in the A line. Same philosophy as the A2, with refined wicking and a slightly better draw. Pods are refillable with the coil integrated, so you replace the pod rather than a coil.

Working out which Caliburn you own

This is the source of nearly every wrong order, so check rather than guess.

The model name is printed on the body of the device, usually near the base. Look for G, G2, G3, A2, A2S or A3S. Several of them look almost identical at arm’s length and the pods are not interchangeable between generations.

A useful shortcut: if your pod has a small removable coil that you can pull out of the bottom, you are on the G line. If the pod is a single sealed unit with nothing removable, you are on the A line.

The G line against the A line

The G line costs more up front and less to run, because you replace a cheap coil rather than the whole pod. It also gives you adjustable airflow and a slightly better flavour ceiling.

The A line is cheaper to buy and simpler to live with. Nothing to assemble, no coil to seat correctly, no way to get it wrong.

If you vape daily, the G line is the better economics. If you want the fewest possible decisions, take the A line. Neither is a bad choice and plenty of people own both.

Nicotine strength and liquid choice

UK law caps e liquid at 20mg per ml. Every Caliburn is a mouth to lung device, so nicotine salt is what you want, at 10mg or 20mg depending on how heavily you smoked. Our nic salt range covers both.

Liquid thickness matters too. Caliburn coils are small and want a thinner, PG heavier blend, typically 50/50. A very high VG shortfill cannot wick fast enough through a small coil and produces dry hits that people wrongly diagnose as a faulty pod.

Two signals tell you the strength is wrong. Headaches or a scratchy throat mean too high. Vaping constantly while still craving a cigarette means too low, and that is the more dangerous error because it is what sends people back to smoking.

Pod life and how to extend it

One to two weeks is normal for a coil or pod, and your e liquid decides where in that range you land.

Clear fruit and menthol blends are gentle. Sweet dessert, custard and bakery flavours carry heavy sweetener that caramelises onto the coil and can halve the life. That is chemistry, not a defect.

Three habits help. Let a freshly filled pod stand three to five minutes so the wick saturates before the first draw. Take slow, long draws rather than short sharp ones, because these are mouth to lung devices. And keep pods upright and out of heat, since warm liquid thins and works past the seals.

Troubleshooting

Burnt taste on a new pod. The wick was dry when first vaped. Nothing recovers a scorched wick, so fit a fresh one and let it stand properly.

Leaking. Usually overfilling, or on the G line a coil not seated fully. Fill just below the line and press the coil home firmly.

Gurgling or spitback. Liquid pooled in the airway after being carried warm. Remove the pod and tap it gently mouthpiece down onto kitchen roll.

Device not firing. Charge it, then wipe the contacts on both pod and device with dry kitchen roll. E liquid creeping onto contacts is the usual cause and looks exactly like a flat battery.

Weak draw. Check the airflow slot on the pod has not rotated closed in a pocket, which is the first thing to check on a G3.

Filling a Caliburn properly

Wait until the pod is genuinely empty rather than topping up early, because mixing a nearly finished pod with fresh liquid muddies the flavour and does nothing for the coil.

Open the fill port, insert the nozzle and squeeze slowly. Fill to just below the maximum line rather than the very top, because that small air gap is what stops liquid being forced into the airway when the pod warms in your hand.

Close the port firmly and stand the pod upright for three to five minutes. On the G line, if you have just fitted a new coil, drip two or three drops directly onto the exposed cotton before assembling. That is the difference between a coil that lasts two weeks and one that tastes burnt on day one.

Your first week

Order the device, a spare pack of pods or coils, and two e liquid flavours at the same time. Running out of any of the three mid week is the most common practical reason a switch away from cigarettes fails.

Charge fully before first use. Start on a tobacco or menthol flavour if you have just stopped smoking, because familiarity carries you through the first few days, then move to fruit once the habit has settled.

Expect two or three days of adjustment. The hand to mouth routine transfers immediately, the throat sensation takes longer to feel normal. Keep the device on you, because the classic relapse is leaving it at home and buying cigarettes out of convenience.

Flavour rotation and vapers tongue

After several days on one flavour it will seem to fade. That is not the liquid degrading or the coil failing, it is your palate adapting to a repeated stimulus, and it has a name: vapers tongue.

The fix is rotation. Keep two or three flavours from different families and switch every few days. Drink more water, because a dry mouth flattens taste considerably. The original flavour usually returns within a day of switching away from it.

Care and storage

Wipe the pod contacts and device connector weekly with dry kitchen roll. E liquid creeps into the connection over time and causes intermittent firing that convincingly imitates a dead battery.

Store e liquid upright, sealed and out of sunlight. Nicotine oxidises with light and heat, darkening the liquid and dulling the flavour well before its best before date. Keep bottles away from children and pets, since child resistant caps are a delay rather than a guarantee.
