Where Voopoo sits in the market

Voopoo built its name on chipsets. The GENE chip that powers its mods was for several years the most responsive firing platform available, and it is why the brand keeps a following among people who care how quickly a device fires and how accurately it holds wattage.

That engineering focus shows in the pod systems too. Voopoo devices tend to be more configurable than the simple plug and play competition, which suits people who have moved past their first kit and want some control back.

The flip side is a proliferation of pod and coil formats. Voopoo has released a lot of platforms, and telling them apart is genuinely confusing, which is what the next few sections exist to fix.

Argus top fill replacement pods

Argus is Voopoo’s most popular pod line and these are the top fill version, which is the one you want. Top filling means lifting a cap and pouring liquid in rather than turning the pod over and prising out a rubber bung that will eventually be lost under a sofa.

The Argus family is broad, spanning pod kits and pod mods, and the top fill pods cover the mainstream devices in it.

ITO coils and cartridges

ITO is the platform used in the Doric and several slimmer Voopoo devices. We stock both ITO replacement coils and ITO replacement cartridges, and the difference is the single most common source of wrong orders.

A cartridge is the whole pod including the coil built into it. A coil is just the heating element, which slots into a cartridge you keep and reuse. Check which your device uses before ordering, because the two are not substitutes.

VMATE V2 replacement pods

VMATE is the compact end of the range and the V2 pods fit second generation devices. They are not interchangeable with first generation VMATE pods, which catches people out regularly.

PnP-X replacement coils

PnP is Voopoo’s longest running coil platform and PnP-X is the updated version. PnP coils are push fit rather than threaded, which makes changing one a two second job with no tools and no risk of cross threading.

The platform spans a wide resistance range, so the same device can be set up for a tight cigarette style draw or an open cloudy one purely by swapping the coil. That flexibility is the main reason people stay on the platform.

Uforce-X sub ohm tank

The Uforce-X is the tank in the range, intended for direct to lung vaping on a 510 mod. It is a genuine sub ohm tank rather than a pod, so it produces far more vapour and wants far lower nicotine.

Pair it with 20mg nicotine salt and it will be harsh and wasteful. Use 3mg or 6mg freebase instead. That one rule prevents most bad first experiences with sub ohm hardware.

Working out which part you need

Read the device, not the shape. Voopoo prints the model name on the body, usually near the base, and several platforms look nearly identical from a metre away.

Then establish whether your device takes a whole cartridge or a coil that fits into a reusable pod. If liquid sits in a chamber you keep and you drop a small metal cylinder into the bottom of it, you need coils. If the entire clear part is replaced with the coil built in, you need cartridges or pods.

If in doubt, take the old part out and photograph it before ordering. Almost every wrong order in this category comes from guessing rather than checking.

Resistance and what it changes

Resistance in ohms is printed on every coil and pod, and it determines how a device behaves more than any other single factor.

Higher resistance, roughly 1.0 to 1.8 ohms, gives less vapour, a cooler draw and a tight mouth to lung feel. Pair it with high nicotine salt.

Lower resistance, roughly 0.15 to 0.8 ohms, gives more vapour, a warmer draw and a loose direct to lung feel. Pair it with low nicotine freebase.

The mismatch between resistance and nicotine strength is behind almost every complaint about a device feeling wrong, and it is entirely avoidable.

Matching your nicotine strength

UK law caps e liquid at 20mg per ml. For an Argus, ITO or VMATE pod on a higher resistance, take 10mg or 20mg nicotine salt from our nic salt range, depending on how heavily you smoked.

For the Uforce-X or any coil below about 0.8 ohms, drop to 3mg or 6mg freebase. Vapour volume and nicotine strength move in opposite directions, and that is the whole rule.

Making coils and pods last

One to three weeks is normal, and your e liquid choice matters far more than the hardware does.

Clear fruit and menthol are gentle. Sweet dessert, custard and bakery flavours caramelise sweetener onto the coil and can quarter its life. This is chemistry and it applies to every brand equally, so it is not a reason to switch hardware.

Prime every new coil. Drip liquid onto the exposed cotton before fitting, fill, then let it stand five minutes. A dry first pull scorches the wick permanently, so those five minutes are the cheapest insurance in vaping.

Troubleshooting

Burnt taste immediately. Not primed, or vaped straight after filling. Fit a fresh coil and prime it properly.

Leaking around the base. Usually a coil not seated squarely, or an overtightened tank flattening the O ring. Reseat finger tight rather than cranking it down.

Gurgling. Liquid in the airway after being carried warm. Remove the pod and tap it gently mouthpiece down onto kitchen roll.

Device not firing. Charge it, then clean both sets of contacts with dry kitchen roll. Creeping e liquid on contacts mimics a dead battery convincingly.

Wattage jumping around. On pod mods this usually means a dirty coil contact or a pod that is not fully seated. Remove, wipe, refit.

If you are buying fresh rather than replacing

Voopoo is a strong choice if you want configurability and do not mind reading a manual. If you want the simplest possible device, our Vaporesso XROS range needs no settings at all. Looking after the hardware

Wipe the pod contacts and the device connector weekly with dry kitchen roll. Rinse tank glass when changing flavour family and dry it fully, because residue is why a new flavour tastes muddy for the first tank.

Do not overtighten. Tanks seal on rubber O rings and cranking them down flattens the seal, which causes the leaks people then blame on the tank. Finger tight is correct, and O rings are cheap to replace when they perish.

Charge with a decent cable and a reputable plug. Cheap unbranded chargers are behind most lithium battery faults, and the saving is never worth it.

UK rules

All e liquid sold legally in the UK is capped at 20mg per ml nicotine, bottled liquid at 10ml and tanks and pods at 2ml. Products must be notified to the MHRA before sale and carry child resistant, tamper evident packaging. The MHRA guidance sets out the requirements in full.

Pod kits, pod mods and mods explained

Voopoo spans all three categories and the names are not obvious, so it is worth being clear about what you are actually buying.

A pod kit is a sealed battery with a pod on top. No settings, no screen, and the coil is chosen for you by which pod you fit. This is where almost everyone should start.

A pod mod keeps the pod format but adds a screen, adjustable wattage and usually a bigger battery. Voopoo does this better than most, and it is the category the brand is really known for.

A mod is a bare battery with a 510 connector that takes any tank, including the Uforce-X. Maximum flexibility, maximum things to get wrong, and not where a new vaper should begin.

Setting wattage on a pod mod

If your device has a screen, the coil will have a recommended range printed on it. Start at the bottom of that range rather than the top.

Too low and the flavour is thin and the vapour cool. Too high and you will burn the wick faster than it can rewick, which produces that dry, scorched note. Work upward in small steps until the flavour is full but clean, then stop.

A common mistake is assuming higher wattage always means better. It does not. It means hotter, and past a certain point that just cooks your e liquid and shortens coil life for no gain.

Your first week

Order the device, spare coils or pods, and two e liquid flavours together. Running short on any of the three mid week is the most common practical reason a switch away from cigarettes collapses.

Prime, fill, wait five minutes. Start on tobacco or menthol if you have just stopped smoking, then move to fruit once the habit has settled. Keep the device on you at all times, because the classic relapse is leaving it at home and buying cigarettes out of convenience.

Battery safety

Built in lithium cells are safe when treated sensibly. Do not charge unattended overnight, do not leave a device in a hot car or in direct sun, and never carry loose external cells in a pocket with keys or coins, because shorting the terminals is what causes the incidents people read about.

If a device gets hot while charging or the casing swells at all, stop using it and take it to a recycling point rather than putting it in household waste. Lithium in bin lorries is a genuine fire risk and most supermarkets and councils now run take back schemes.
