Setting up for mouth to lung

Mouth to lung means drawing vapour into the mouth first, then inhaling, exactly as you would smoke. Three things need to line up for it to feel right.

Airflow closed down tight. A higher resistance coil, around 1.0 to 1.8 ohms. And a higher nicotine strength, typically 10mg or 20mg salt.

Get one wrong and the whole thing feels off. Open airflow with 20mg is harsh. Tight airflow with 3mg leaves you unsatisfied and vaping constantly, which is the failure mode that sends people back to cigarettes. A Zlide closed down with a 1.6 ohm coil and 20mg salt is a combination that works for most ex smokers.

Nicotine strength and liquid choice

UK law caps e liquid at 20mg per ml. For the Zlide or GO Z on a tight setting, take nicotine salt at 10mg or 20mg from our nic salt range. For the GoMax on lower resistance, drop to 3mg or 6mg freebase.

Liquid thickness matters as much as strength. A tight mouth to lung coil wants a thinner, PG heavier blend, typically 50/50. Push a very high VG shortfill through a small coil and it cannot wick fast enough, giving dry hits that feel like faulty hardware but are simply a mismatch.

Coil life and priming

Expect one to three weeks, decided almost entirely by your e liquid rather than the coil.

Clear fruit and menthol are kind. Sweet dessert, custard and bakery blends caramelise onto the wire and can finish a coil in days. That is chemistry rather than a defect.

Prime every coil. Drip liquid directly onto the exposed cotton ports, fit it, fill the tank and let it stand five minutes before the first draw. Skipping that step scorches the wick immediately and permanently. It is the most expensive five minutes anyone saves in vaping.

Troubleshooting

Burnt taste. The coil is finished or was never primed. Neither is recoverable.

Leaking from the airflow. Usually overfilling, or a coil not screwed in squarely. Empty, reseat the coil finger tight and refill to just below the line.

Gurgling. Liquid in the airway, typically after being carried warm in a pocket. Remove the tank and blow gently through it onto kitchen roll.

Tight or blocked draw. Check the airflow ring has not rotated closed in your pocket. It is the first thing to check and the last thing people think of.

Flavour muddy after a flavour change. Residue in the glass and chimney. Rinse under warm water and dry fully before refilling.

Looking after a tank

Rinse the glass and chimney when you change flavour family and let everything dry completely before refilling.

Do not overtighten. Tanks seal on rubber O rings and cranking them down flattens the seal, which causes the leaks people then blame on the tank. Finger tight is correct. Check the O rings occasionally, because they perish slowly and a perished ring is behind most mystery leaks on otherwise sound hardware.

Keep spare glass if your tank uses it. Dropping a tank on a tiled floor is the most common way a perfectly good setup ends its life.

Choosing a mod to pair with your tank

Every tank on this page needs a battery, and the choice is simpler than the market makes it look.

For mouth to lung tanks like the Zlide or GO Z you want a modest single battery mod with adjustable wattage in the 10 to 25 watt range. You do not need 200 watts and you will never use it.

For the GoMax you want a little more headroom, comfortably up to 50 watts, because lower resistance coils run hotter.

Battery capacity matters more than maximum wattage for most people. A larger cell means fewer charges, and that is what you actually notice day to day.

Finding the right wattage

Every coil has a recommended range printed on it. Start at the bottom of that range, not the top.

Too low and the flavour is thin and the vapour cool. Too high and you outrun the wick, producing a dry scorched note that people mistake for a faulty coil. Work up in small steps until the flavour is full but clean, then leave it alone.

Higher wattage is not better, it is hotter. Past a certain point you are simply cooking your e liquid and shortening coil life for no gain in satisfaction.
