Why Aspire is still worth buying

The vape market churns constantly. Brands appear, sell one popular device and vanish, leaving owners unable to buy coils eighteen months later. Aspire has been shipping since the early 2010s and still supports hardware it launched years ago, which is why the PockeX spares on this page exist at all.

That matters practically. If you buy a tank and the coils are discontinued in a year, you have bought a paperweight. Aspire coil lines have long production runs, and the Nautilus BVC coil has been in continuous manufacture for over a decade.

The other reason is that Aspire builds for mouth to lung rather than chasing cloud size. Almost everyone switching from cigarettes wants a tight, cigarette like draw, and Aspire has always designed around that.

Aspire Gotek Nano pod kit

The Aspire Gotek Nano Pod Kit is the entry point and the one we recommend to most people leaving disposables. There is no wattage to set, no screen and no menu. You fill the pod from the top, click it in and draw.

The draw is deliberately tight, close to a cigarette, which is exactly what an ex smoker wants and exactly what most cloud focused devices get wrong. Gotek replacement pods are sold in two packs so you can keep a spare in rotation.

The top fill is the detail worth paying for. Older pod systems filled through a rubber bung underneath, which meant turning the pod upside down, losing the bung and getting liquid on your fingers. Lifting a cap and filling from above removes all of that.

Nautilus 3, the tank that made the brand

The Aspire Nautilus 3 is the tank the brand is known for, and it remains the reference mouth to lung tank in the UK.

What sets it apart is the airflow control. A rotating ring lets you close the draw right down to something genuinely cigarette tight, or open it out for a looser restricted lung hit. Most tanks give you two or three positions. The Nautilus gives you a continuous range, and the difference in how satisfying the device feels is significant.

Aspire AF tank and Flexus

Coils, which one you need

Buying the wrong coil is the most common ordering mistake, so here is the short version.

Nautilus BVC coils fit the Nautilus family, including the Nautilus 3. BVC stands for bottom vertical coil, the design that has kept this line in production for over a decade.

AF replacement coils fit the AF tank and Flexus devices. Sold in packs of five.

PockeX coils fit the PockeX all in one, sold in five packs. The PockeX is discontinued as a device but a great many are still in daily use, which is why we keep the coils and spares in stock.

Resistance matters as much as fitment. A higher resistance coil, around 1.6 to 1.8 ohms, gives a tighter draw and suits higher nicotine. A lower resistance, around 0.7 ohms, gives more vapour and warmth and wants lower nicotine.

How long a coil lasts

Between one and three weeks, and the variable is almost entirely your e liquid rather than the coil itself.

Clear fruit and menthol liquids are kind to coils. Sweet dessert, custard, bakery and anything with a heavy sweetener load caramelises onto the wire and shortens life dramatically, sometimes to three or four days. High VG liquids also wick more slowly than high PG ones, which matters in a tight mouth to lung coil.

Two habits extend coil life more than anything else. Prime every new coil by dripping liquid directly onto the exposed cotton before fitting, then let the filled tank stand for five minutes. And never let the tank run dry, because even one dry pull scorches the wick permanently.

Replace as soon as flavour dulls. Running a burnt coil is how people conclude vaping is unpleasant and return to cigarettes.

Spares and accessories

Building a proper mouth to lung setup

Mouth to lung means drawing vapour into the mouth first, then inhaling, exactly as you would smoke. It is what almost every ex smoker actually wants, and it needs three things to line up: tight airflow, a higher resistance coil and a higher nicotine strength.

Get one wrong and the whole thing feels off. Open airflow with 20mg nicotine is harsh. Tight airflow with 3mg leaves you unsatisfied and vaping constantly. A Nautilus 3 closed down, a 1.8 ohm BVC coil and a 12mg to 20mg liquid is a combination that works for most people.

Which Aspire should you buy?

If you are coming off cigarettes and want the simplest possible start, take the Gotek Nano. If you already vape and want better flavour, take the Nautilus 3 with a mod you already own. If you want Nautilus performance in something smaller, take the AF tank.

Nicotine strength for Aspire devices

UK law caps e liquid at 20mg per ml. For a tight mouth to lung setup like the Gotek Nano or a closed down Nautilus, nicotine salt at 10mg or 20mg is right for most ex smokers. Our nic salt range covers both.

If you open the airflow up and run a lower resistance coil, drop to 3mg or 6mg freebase instead. Vapour volume and nicotine strength move in opposite directions.

Troubleshooting

Burnt taste. The coil is finished or was never primed. Neither is recoverable, so fit a fresh one and prime it properly.

Leaking from the airflow. Usually overfilling, or a coil not seated squarely. Empty, refit the coil finger tight and refill to just below the line.

Gurgling. Liquid in the airway, typically after being carried warm. Remove the tank, blow gently through it onto kitchen roll and refit.

No flavour after a fortnight. Usually vapers tongue rather than hardware. Change flavour family for a day and it resets.

UK rules that apply here

All e liquid sold legally in the UK is capped at 20mg per ml nicotine, bottled liquid at 10ml and tanks at 2ml. Products must be notified to the MHRA before sale and carry child resistant, tamper evident packaging. The MHRA guidance on e cigarette regulations sets out the requirements in full.

PG and VG, and why the ratio matters

Every e liquid is built on two carrier liquids. Propylene glycol is thin, carries flavour well and gives the throat hit that ex smokers look for. Vegetable glycerine is thick, sweet and produces the visible vapour.

A tight mouth to lung coil like a Nautilus BVC wants a thinner liquid, so a 50/50 or 60/40 PG heavy blend wicks properly. Push a very high VG liquid through a small coil and it cannot wick fast enough, which produces dry hits that feel like a faulty coil but are actually a mismatch.

Nic salts are almost always 50/50, which is another reason they suit these devices. If you are buying a high VG shortfill for a sub ohm tank, that is a different setup entirely.

Your first week

Order the device, spare coils or pods, and two e liquid flavours together. Running out mid week is the most common reason a switch fails.

Prime the coil, fill the tank, then leave it standing for five minutes before the first draw. Start on a tobacco or menthol flavour if you have just stopped smoking, because familiarity helps in the first few days, then move to fruit once the habit settles.

Expect two or three days of adjustment. The hand to mouth routine carries over instantly, but the throat sensation takes longer. Looking after your tank

Rinse the glass and chimney under warm water when you change flavour, and let it dry fully before refilling. Residue from a previous liquid is the usual reason a new flavour tastes muddy.

Do not overtighten. Tanks seal on rubber O rings, and cranking them down flattens the seal and causes the leaks people then blame on the tank. Finger tight is correct.

Check the O rings once in a while. They perish slowly, they are cheap to replace, and a perished ring is behind most mystery leaks on otherwise sound hardware.
